It has always been thought that braces are for kids, nothing could be further from the truth. Today, nearly half of those getting braces in Westmount are adults who are now looking to get the perfect teeth that they have dreamed about for years.

Braces have come a long way in the last couple of decades, no longer is it necessary to have a mouth full of metal, today there are options which are far more cosmetically friendly that ever before. Brackets are far smaller than they were in the past and the bands that wrapped around the tooth are no longer used. Modern braces use small bonded brackets or clear braces. There is less pain and discomfort than ever before and the complete process normally runs from 12 to 18 months.

There are probably as many reasons for adults getting braces in Westmount as there are patients but two which are often stated are; “I can afford it and my parents couldn’t” and of course people are conscious of the health and cosmetic benefits of having teeth which are perfectly aligned.

Straight teeth make a big difference in the professional and personal life of anyone, those adults that opt for braces are the first to say that the temporary inconvenience and cost of wearing them is more than offset by the benefits.

It is not only the cosmetic benefits; dentists will be the first to support the health reasons behind having straight teeth. When teeth are misaligned or are in a cross-bite it is much easier for food and plaque to build up. Plaque is the underlying cause of periodontal disease and because food is not been properly chewed it can lead to gastrointestinal issues as well.

Today there are numerous options for braces in Westmount. If you elect to go with traditional braces you can choose metal, clear or ceramic. For patients with serious problems metal braces are somewhat better at repositioning the teeth than clear braces. Clear braces are a good choice in the majority of cases when the patient does not have a significant problem although the adhesive used to hold the bracket to the tooth can stain from coffee, tea and smoking.

Another option that many adults are opting for are clear aligners. These are a series of clear trays that are removable for cleaning and eating and it is much easier to clean the teeth. The aligners slowly reposition the teeth over a period of time, different trays are used every couple of weeks for several months.

Just as many adults as young people are now finding the benefits of getting braces in Westmount. If you are considering braces you are invited to make an appointment with OakbrookOrtho.com.
