If you love creating ceramic objects, a career in ceramics might be perfect for you. There are many schools out there that offer programs but going to school is just the first step. Here’s what you can expect when studying this field.

Ceramics Coursework

If you are an artist interested in this industry, you might be surprised to find several programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. You will learn everything there is to know about sculpting different materials, but specifically, focus on clay and other elements of the earth. You will also learn about different sculpting techniques and skills.

Degree Options

Most schools offer a BFA which is a Bachelor of Fine Arts and an MFA, which is a Master of Fine Arts, both in ceramics studies. Most bachelor programs also teach things like art history in addition to teaching ceramics studies. You will probably have to do a lot of studio work, too, as well as enter your creations in shows.

A master degree program is a bit different. In these cases, you will likely spend much more time in a studio, and also learn techniques that are far more advanced. You also will likely get into ceramics theory more, too, as well as possibly teach ceramics classes of your own. Generally, however, you will be focused on creating a physical piece of art.

Career Options

Once you are out in the world with your degree or degrees, you probably want to become a working artist. Most of these people are self-employed, but you can also find work elsewhere, such as in teaching, making pottery for other companies or sculpting. If you choose the self-employed route, you might have to take a second job before your talent really pays off.

If you want to get into a ceramic program, consider school at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. You can learn more at http://www.SAIC.edu.
