Photographers, banquet and reception managers, trade show exhibitors, and even schools may all have the need for a backdrop. Rather than having to find one to rent for each event, buying a backdrop stand and several panels or drapes allows you to always have it when you need it.
However, getting the right backdrop stand is going to be important. You don’t want something that is flimsy or easy to tip over; rather you want something that is sturdy and well designed. On the other hand, you do need to keep in mind that the stand has to be easy to take down and store, and you want to avoid items that are heavy or simply too much effort to have to assemble and take apart.
A Set or Pieces?
There are two different options for a backdrop stand. One is to choose a set, which will include two bases, two uprights and a crossbar. These come in different widths and heights with most being adjustable up to a maximum height and width.
The benefit of choosing a pipe set is that you know all the components work together and that the base will easily support the stand as well as the drapes. With these sets, you can also have more than one to create a cube or a box or even a corner type of backdrop, perfect for use at trade shows or exhibitions as well as for special events.
Buying each piece of the backdrop stand separately is also a good option. This allows you to customize the shape of the system and to create your own unique configurations. Of course, there is a limit to how large these can be or how much weight they can hold, so staying within the recommended use will be important.
Ease of Assembly
Always consider how the backdrop stand is assembled and how easy this will be if you are on your own. Most of the top brands and styles use a slip collar attachment for the uprights, which allows them to telescope up or down and then, which a simple twist of the locking collar, they are held in place.
The crossbar will also slide in or out of itself to give you the desired length. Usually this uses a system of punched holes on the outside component and a pop-up button on the inside. Once in the right position, the button simply pops up, holding the crossbar at the desired length.
Always look for a backdrop stand made of aluminum as this is durable, travels very well, and is lightweight yet strong. These stands are a great investment and something you will continue to use for years to come.
