Making sure that your children’s dental needs are taken care of is one of the responsibilities of being a good parent. If you have children, it is important that you take them to see a dentist in the Magnolia area on a regular basis. For most parents, this is simply a matter of common sense, even if they do not schedule visits to the dentist as regularly as they should.

United Press International reported this week of a Pennsylvania man who was sentenced to two years in prison because he failed to provide visits to the dentist for his son even when the boy tried to pull out the teeth that were rotting inside of his mouth.

According to The Express-Times, 41-year-old Francisco Torres refused to take his 14-year-old son to the dentist even though the boy complained of tooth pain for several weeks. Police reported that the teenager had tried to pull two of his teeth out because the pain was so bad. In attempting to extract the teeth with pliers, the boy broke them off. This meant that there were now jagged edges in his gums. He eventually required surgery in order to remove the teeth and to prevent a possibly fatal spread of infection.

The boy is now under the care of a dentist. The father has been sentenced to prison time despite arguments from his attorney that Torres has a history of mental disabilities and drug abuse that render him unable to fulfil his responsibilities as a parent.

Thankfully, most parents do not suffer from the same liabilities in parenting as Mr. Torres and know to get their children to the dentist in Magnolia on a regular basis. Still, it is often the dentist visit that gets pushed to a back burner in the hectic lives of families.

However, preventative care is the best kind of dental care, especially in the case of children. By scheduling regular visits to the dentist, parents are demonstrating to children that good dental hygiene is just as important as soccer practice, school, and chores. Studies have shown that children who engage in good dental practices as children carry those same habits into adulthood.
